Description
An elegant mid-19th century Victorian carved walnut sofa of generous proportions, raised on finely shaped cabriole legs terminating in ceramic castors. The serpentine frame is richly carved with flowing acanthus leaves, floral garlands and scrolling foliage, particularly pronounced along the cresting rail, apron and arm supports, demonstrating the skilled craftsmanship typical of high Victorian furniture.
The sofa features a sweeping, shaped back and outward scrolled arms, creating a graceful silhouette. It has been upholstered in a deep blue fabric which complements the warm tones of the walnut frame and highlights the elaborate carving. Decorative braid trim follows the contours of the frame, accentuating the serpentine seat and back.
The front rail is especially ornate, centred with a carved floral cartouche and flanked by scrolling foliate ornament, while the cabriole legs are similarly embellished and fitted with porcelain castors for ease of movement.
