Description

A finely executed carved oak lectern of pronounced Gothic Revival character, distinguished by its rich surface carving, architectural form, and solid craftsmanship. Constructed from well-figured oak with a warm, mellow patina, the lectern is designed with a sloping reading surface surmounted by a raised book rest, suitable for liturgical, academic, or ceremonial use.
The front elevation is centred by a deeply carved foliate roundel, framed within a rectangular panel, exhibiting confident hand-carving with crisp detailing and strong relief. Below and to either side, the structure is articulated by open Gothic tracery panels, lending both visual lightness and architectural rhythm to the form. The reverse features a fully panelled back enriched with carved trefoil arches, scrolling foliate ornament, and a circular motif above a horizontal band of repeating floral blocks, demonstrating that the piece was intended to be viewed in the round rather than placed against a wall.
The upper frieze and supports are further enhanced with scrolling vine and leaf carving, while the uprights terminate in shaped feet resting on a stepped rectangular base, providing stability and visual weight. The lectern retains its original proportions and integrity, with no later alterations evident, and shows minor wear consistent with age and use.
